Emotional-intelligence measures are associated with workplace stress, and one prospective study found that a self-report EI measure preceded later perceived stress in medical students. Neither finding tells you why one employee's result changed. The same number can answer different questions

What the broad workplace evidence actually shows
A 2022 psychometric meta-analysis combined studies of employee outcomes and separated ability, self-report, and mixed EI measures. Across 31 samples used for job stress, overall EI had a negative relationship with job stress. The same general pattern appeared within each of the three streams. In ordinary language, higher scores on the measures in those studies tended to occur alongside lower reported job stress.

The finding is a useful example of prospective evidence, not proof that a workplace EQ result will predict stress during a reorganisation, a conflict with a manager, or a long period of understaffing.
A time-lagged association can still leave several explanations open. Earlier stress may have influenced the first self-report. Students may differ in circumstances that were not captured by the score. The study's result supports asking whether an initial measure precedes a later experience; it does not settle what produces that experience.
Stress does not affect every kind of EI measure in the same way

A separate 2021 experiment studied whether induced mood changed selected subjective reports among employees. A score that remains changed while the conversation improves tells you that self-perception and behavior are moving on different timelines. Neither pattern identifies a cause alone.
